A four-year Bachelor of Science with a Major in Applied Mathematics that develops applied mathematical techniques for use in domains such as scientific and medical research, computer science, finance and engineering. What you'll study

The major requires 45 credits of mathematics courses within the Bachelor of Science degree. Core mathematics courses (36 credits) cover linear algebra (MATH 270, 271), calculus sequence including multivariable calculus (MATH 265/266, MATH 365), discrete mathematics (MATH 309), applied statistics and methods (MATH 215 or MATH 216; MATH 315), complex variables (MATH 366), applied real analysis (MATH 370), differential equations (MATH 376), partial differential equations (MATH 476), mathematical modeling (MATH 480) and a projects course (MATH 495). Students also take science core courses such as Scientific Reasoning (SCIE 326), Research Methods in Science (SCIE 480) or COMP 494 where applicable, a professional ethics course (PHIL 333 or PHIL 371), and an introductory computing course (COMP 200 or COMP 210). Electives (minimum 9 credits) must be chosen from MATH, with at least 6 credits at the 300 level or higher. Program totals follow the BSc structure of 120 credits with specified senior and science credit minimums.

Entry requirements

Students follow the program regulations in effect at enrolment. Preparatory (100‑level) credits are limited (maximum 6). The program has residency requirements: a minimum of 30 credits must be obtained through Athabasca University, with at least 24 AU credits required to be considered for Graduation with Distinction. Students may be exempted from the ENGL 255 writing requirement if they hold a B‑ (70%) or better in an AU English course above the 100 level or equivalent credit; an exempted ENGL 255 must be replaced by a 3‑credit junior/senior course. Those holding a prior degree and seeking a second undergraduate degree are enrolled under second degree regulations and may transfer up to 50% (60 credits) where applicable (100‑level preparatory credits cannot be used). Transfer and currency rules apply for some computing and science courses older than five or ten years (proof of currency such as résumé and employer letter may be required). Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) credits are limited (maximum 30).
