Scholarship Description:

Heinrich Boll Foundation Scholarships is open for International Students German students and EU students. The scholarship allows Masters, PhD level program(s) in the field of All Subjects taught at Germany Universities, Sweden Universities . The deadline of the scholarship is 1 March (Annual).

The Heinrich Böll Foundation awards scholarships to German and foreign students in accordance with the guidelines issued by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt). Scholarships are awarded for the regular period of study.

Degree Level:

Heinrich Boll Foundation Scholarships is available to undertake Masters, PhD level programs at Germany Universities, Sweden Universities.

  • Non-EU nationals/ Students1 not educated in Germany: Degree courses at state or staterecognised universities in Germany.
  • EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany: Degree courses at state or staterecognised universities in Germany, Switzerland and other EU member states.
  • Germans/Foreign students educated in Germany: Degree courses at state or staterecognised universities in Germany, Switzerland and other EU member states

Scholarship Benefits:

Masters Program:
  • Non-EU nationals/ Students1 not educated in Germany: 
    • €850 per month plus various individual allowances
    • For scholarship-holders only: Funding is available for limited periods spent abroad for purpose of study
  • EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany: 
    • Varies, like the German BaföG, according to parental income or own assets or earnings: max. €649 plus €300 book money per month
    • Additional funding available for scholarship-holders only
  • Germans/Foreign students educated in Germany: 
    • Varies, like the German BaföG, according to parental income or own assets or earnings: max. €649 plus €300 book money per month
    • Additional funding available for scholarship-holders only

PhD Program:

  • Non-EU nationals/ Students1 not educated in Germany: 
    • €1,200 per month, plus € 100 mobility allowance per month, plus various individual allowances
    • For scholarship-holders only: Funding is available for limited periods spent abroad for purpose of study
  • EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany: 
    • €1350,- per month basic scholarship plus €100 per month research costs allowance
    • Additional funding available for scholarship-holders only
  • Germans/Foreign students educated in Germany: 
    • €1350,- per month basic scholarship plus €100 per month research costs allowance
    • Additional funding available for scholarship-holders only

Eligible Nationalities:

The scholarship program provides scholarships to german students, international students and both EU and non-EU.

Eligibility Criteria:

International Master students who earned their university entrance qualification outside Germany:

  • You may apply before commencing your Masters programme or at any time up to the end of the first semester of the Masters programme.
  • Proof of first professional qualification must be provided

International Doctoral students who earned the university entrance qualification outside Germany:

  • The applicant must have been accepted as a doctoral student by a state or state-recognised university in Germany. Proof of admission, as a rule in Germany, must be included with the application.
  • By the application date, preliminary work must have been completed and a valid timetable for completion must be submitted.
  • PhD subjects related to focal points of the Foundation’s activities will be given priority.
