What you'll study

This programme builds a strong foundation in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, econometrics and quantitative analysis, then applies those tools to environmental problems and policy design. Core coursework typically covers advanced microeconomics, applied econometrics, benefit-cost analysis and environmental economics. Electives and specialised modules may include resource and natural resource economics, environmental valuation techniques, climate policy and regulation, energy economics, land-use and biodiversity economics, and policy evaluation methods.

Students will undertake applied projects using data analysis and modelling, and many programmes include a capstone research paper or thesis option. Practical skills emphasised include regression analysis, programme evaluation, cost–benefit and cost–effectiveness analysis, and communicating economic evidence for policy audiences. Where available, students can take interdisciplinary courses in agriculture, public policy, geography or sustainability to broaden applied perspectives.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in economics, environmental studies, mathematics, statistics, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated quantitative preparation — such as coursework in calculus, intermediate microeconomics and statistics — strengthens an application. Required application materials typically include official transcripts, a personal statement outlining academic and professional goals, and letters of recommendation.

Some applicants may be asked to provide GRE scores if their undergraduate preparation is unconventional; others may be admitted provisionally and required to take preparatory coursework. International applicants must meet English language proficiency standards as set by the university. Relevant work experience or research in environmental fields is advantageous but not always mandatory.
