What you'll study

The programme combines intensive coursework in core subfields with advanced methodological training and original dissertation research. Common subfields represented in the curriculum include American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, formal theory and political methodology.

• Core coursework: foundational seminars in major subfields and a sequence in political research methods (statistics, causal inference, survey methods, and experimental design).
• Methods training: advanced quantitative and qualitative methods, including courses in econometrics, computational modelling, programme evaluation, text analysis and formal modelling, tailored to students' research agendas.
• Research seminars: small-group seminars that emphasise original research, literature synthesis and peer feedback, often required each year until the dissertation phase.
• Teaching practicum: supervised teaching experience, mentorship, and pedagogical training to prepare students for academic careers.
• Qualifying examinations: sustained preparation for written and/or oral comprehensive exams that assess mastery of chosen fields and readiness to begin dissertation work.
