What you'll study

The programme combines intensive coursework, methodological training, seminars, and original dissertation research. Core study areas include American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and political methodology. In the early years students typically complete a sequence of required courses in political theory and comparative and/or American politics, alongside a strong programme of quantitative and qualitative methods (statistics, causal inference, formal modelling, research design) and specialised elective seminars.

Students develop one or more fields of concentration and take advanced seminars that build towards comprehensive examinations. Regular participation in faculty-led and peer workshops, research colloquia and working groups is central to the programme. After passing field/qualifying exams, students propose and carry out an original doctoral dissertation under the supervision of faculty advisors.
