This PhD programme trains researchers to apply epidemiologic and public health methods to problems at the animal–human interface. It is designed for candidates who wish to pursue research careers in veterinary epidemiology, zoonotic disease, One Health and related policy or applied public-health roles.
The programme combines advanced epidemiologic theory, quantitative methods and applied public-health practice with specialised study of animal health, zoonoses and One Health approaches. Typical core topics include advanced epidemiologic methods, longitudinal and survival analysis, infectious disease modelling, spatial and molecular epidemiology, surveillance and outbreak investigation, and biostatistics. Specialty seminars and electives cover veterinary epidemiology, pathogen ecology, microbial genomics, antimicrobial resistance, animal population dynamics, risk assessment, and policy and regulatory frameworks for animal and public health.
Programme structure normally begins with intensive coursework to build methodological breadth, followed by qualifying examinations and transition to independent research. Students undertake mentored research with faculty advisors, participate in multidisciplinary teams, and complete a doctoral dissertation that contributes new knowledge to veterinary epidemiology and public health.
