What you'll study

The sociology programme combines foundational theory and methods with applied courses that explore contemporary social issues. Core topics include introductory sociology, classical and contemporary social theory, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and social statistics. You will study areas such as race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, social inequality, crime and justice, urban studies, family and ageing, and community development.

The degree typically includes a capstone research project or practicum that allows students to design and carry out an original study or apply sociological skills in a community or organisational setting. Elective options and interdisciplinary courses from education, psychology, criminal justice and peace and conflict studies are available to tailor the programme to individual interests.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary-school qualification. Lesley reviews academic transcripts to assess readiness for college-level work and looks for evidence of strong writing and critical-thinking skills. Typical supporting materials include a personal statement explaining academic interests and goals, and at least one academic or professional letter of recommendation. Applicants with college credits from other institutions may apply as transfer students and should submit official transcripts.

International applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency through accepted tests or other proof of competency. Lesley considers applicants holistically and values relevant volunteer, work, or community-engagement experience.

Career prospects

A sociology degree provides skills in research, data analysis, writing and interpretation of social contexts that are valuable across sectors. Graduates commonly work in non-profit organisations, community development, public policy, social services, criminal justice, education, and human resources. Roles include caseworker, community outreach coordinator, programme administrator, research assistant, policy analyst, victim advocate, and positions in market research and communications.

Many students also use the BA in Sociology as preparation for graduate study in sociology, social work (MSW), public policy, law, education or related disciplines.
