The programme builds a foundation in British, American and global literatures while offering study in linguistic structure, literary theory and a range of applied writing forms. Core work typically includes surveys of major periods and genres, courses in literary theory and criticism, and classes in rhetoric and composition. Students choose electives or a concentration in areas such as creative writing, rhetoric and composition, or literature, and may take specialised seminars on topics like Shakespeare, modern and contemporary fiction, poetry, world literature, digital humanities and film adaptation.

Applied and skills-focused options allow students to develop professional writing abilities: courses in technical writing, editing, professional communication, digital publishing and multimedia composition are commonly available.
