What you'll study

The Bachelor in Nursing combines foundation coursework, nursing core subjects and supervised clinical experiences. Program content covers human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology and pathophysiology before progressing to nursing-specific studies such as health assessment, adult medical-surgical nursing, maternal-child and paediatric nursing, mental health nursing and community/public health.

Students also study leadership and management in healthcare, nursing research and evidence-based practice, quality and safety in clinical settings, informatics and ethics. Clinical reasoning and hands-on skills are developed in simulation laboratories and through multiple practicum placements across acute, ambulatory and community settings.

The degree supports distinct practice emphases including clinical nursing (direct patient care and specialty practice), nursing administration (management, policy and systems leadership) and nursing research (research methods, statistics and evidence translation). Most students complete a capstone, practicum or scholarly project demonstrating clinical competence or an applied research/administration focus.

Entry requirements

• For pre-licensure entry: a high school diploma or equivalent with completion of college preparatory coursework; competitive academic record including biology and chemistry or equivalent college-level prerequisites.
• Successful completion of required general education and prerequisite courses at the college level may be accepted in place of high-school coursework.
• Many applicants are asked to submit standardized entrance examination results (such as the TEAS) and a personal statement; check the programme admissions page for current testing requirements.
• For registered nurses advancing to the BSN: an active, unencumbered RN licence, transcripts from the ADN or diploma programme and completion of any specified bridge coursework.
• All admitted students must satisfy professional readiness requirements prior to clinical placements, which commonly include background checks, health screening and immunisation documentation, drug screening and basic life support (BLS/CPR) certification.
• Clinical placement capacity means selection into the nursing major may be competitive; meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee admission to the clinical sequence.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to sit for the national licensure examination to become Registered Nurses and to enter practice across hospitals, community health agencies, long-term care, home health and outpatient clinics. With experience and optional postgraduate study, graduates move into roles such as charge nurse, nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, nurse educator, case manager or public health nurse.

Those who pursue the nursing administration emphasis are equipped for supervisory and operational roles in units and departments; graduates with a research emphasis may work on clinical research teams, quality improvement or continue to graduate study in nursing research or advanced practice. A BSN also prepares students for graduate study (MSN or DNP) for advanced-practice nursing, leadership and academic careers.
