What you'll study

This programme builds a core grounding in Western philosophical methods while concentrating on the major streams of Chinese thought and their cultural significance. You will study primary texts, historical developments and contemporary interpretations, and gain language skills to access sources in Chinese.

• Core philosophy modules: Introduction to Philosophy, Logic and Critical Thinking, Ethics, Philosophy of Mind or Epistemology, and a capstone research seminar.
• Chinese philosophy modules: Classical Confucianism, Daoist thought (including Dao De Jing and Zhuangzi), Buddhism in East Asia, and courses on Neo-Confucian and modern Chinese philosophy.
• Language and texts: Elementary and intermediate Chinese language courses designed to develop reading competence for primary philosophical texts; advanced reading seminars when available.
• Contextual and comparative modules: Chinese intellectual history, religion and ritual, Chinese political thought, comparative ethics, and courses linking Chinese philosophy to contemporary issues such as environmental ethics and social justice.
• Research and experiential learning: Senior thesis or project, independent study opportunities under faculty supervision, and electives or internships through the university’s regional studies and language programmes.

Structure

The degree typically combines general education requirements, a philosophy major sequence, a concentration of electives in Chinese philosophy and culture, and optional language credits. Students often combine this concentration with minors or double majors in Asian Studies, Religious Studies, History or International Studies. There are opportunities for study abroad, directed research and senior capstone work that demonstrate competency in critical analysis and the ability to read secondary or primary materials in translation or, at higher levels, in Chinese.
