What you'll study

The undergraduate psychology programme covers foundational and applied areas of psychological science. First-year study typically introduces general psychology, research methods and basic statistics. Core subject areas include biological bases of behaviour, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, personality, learning, sensation and perception, and abnormal psychology.

Students also take methodological and quantitative modules such as experimental design, psychometrics and statistics for the behavioural sciences. The programme emphasises active learning: many modules incorporate lab work, data analysis, small-group projects and literature reviews. Upper-division options allow deeper focus through electives in topics such as clinical psychology, cognitive neuroscience, health psychology, industrial/organisational psychology, forensic psychology, and developmental psychopathology.

Undergraduate research is strongly encouraged. Students can join faculty research labs, undertake independent study, or complete a senior thesis/capstone project. There are also opportunities for supervised practicum or internship placements in community, clinical and organisational settings, which develop applied skills and professional experience.

Entry requirements

Applicants must satisfy University of Utah undergraduate admission criteria, which generally include a completed secondary school qualification or an approved transfer credential. Typical expectations are a solid academic record with preparation in English and mathematics; coursework in science and social studies is recommended.
