Cost & earnings at Eastern Mennonite University What students borrow here, and what they go on to earn
The Bachelor in Sports, Kinesiology, and Physical Education at Eastern Mennonite University is a practitioner-focused liberal-arts degree that combines human movement science, coaching and teaching methods, and experiential practicum. It suits students who want a career in physical education, fitness and wellness, coaching, or who plan to continue to graduate study in allied health fields while studying in a small, values-based campus community.
This programme blends foundational coursework in anatomy, physiology and movement science with applied classes in pedagogy, coaching and fitness assessment. Core topics include human anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning and control, sport psychology, fitness assessment and prescription, and nutrition for performance. Students also study teaching methods for physical education, adapted physical education, curriculum development, and assessment strategies for K–12 settings.
Practical, experiential learning is central: you will complete multiple field experiences and practicum placements in schools, community agencies and fitness settings, culminating in a capstone or senior practicum that integrates teaching, coaching or applied clinical skills. Electives and special-topic seminars allow focus on areas such as strength and conditioning, youth sport coaching, wellness programme design, or pre-professional preparation for physical therapy and occupational therapy.
EMU offers a small, student-centred environment where majors work closely with faculty on applied projects and practicum placements in the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding communities. The university’s liberal-arts emphasis ensures strong communication, ethics and critical-thinking skills alongside technical training in movement science and pedagogy. Program students benefit from hands-on field experiences in local schools and community organisations, collaboration with other health and education programmes, and a campus culture that emphasises service, leadership and holistic well-being.
Beyond academics, EMU’s location provides easy access to outdoor recreation that complements study in sport and kinesiology, and the size of the programme supports meaningful mentoring and professional preparation for certification or graduate study pathways.
