What you'll study

This programme blends foundational coursework in anatomy, physiology and movement science with applied classes in pedagogy, coaching and fitness assessment. Core topics include human anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning and control, sport psychology, fitness assessment and prescription, and nutrition for performance. Students also study teaching methods for physical education, adapted physical education, curriculum development, and assessment strategies for K–12 settings.

Practical, experiential learning is central: you will complete multiple field experiences and practicum placements in schools, community agencies and fitness settings, culminating in a capstone or senior practicum that integrates teaching, coaching or applied clinical skills. Electives and special-topic seminars allow focus on areas such as strength and conditioning, youth sport coaching, wellness programme design, or pre-professional preparation for physical therapy and occupational therapy.

Entry requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent with a background in sciences and physical education recommended.
• Competitive academic record; specific GPA expectations vary by applicant pool—contact admissions for current guidance.
• Submission of transcripts and a personal statement describing your interest in kinesiology, sport or education.
• Applicants may be asked for a letter of recommendation and to participate in an interview or campus visit to discuss fit with the programme and the university's mission.
• Transfer applicants should provide college transcripts and course descriptions; many students combine transfer credit with EMU's core and major requirements.
• Pursuit of teacher licensure in physical education typically requires additional state-directed steps (background checks, standardised testing or content examinations); students should consult the education adviser early in the programme.
