This PhD emphasises rigorous training in lifespan development, family processes, and the design and evaluation of interventions and services. Coursework typically covers advanced research methods and statistics (including multilevel modelling, structural equation modelling, and longitudinal data analysis), developmental theory, family systems and relationships, programme evaluation, and specialised seminars in topics such as early childhood development, adolescence, ageing, and disability studies.

Students follow a combination of core and elective courses plus supervised research. Typical components include:
