What you'll study

The programme builds a strong foundation in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics before moving into focused courses on environmental issues. Core modules typically include introductory and intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics, statistics for economists and econometric methods. Concentration or elective modules emphasise topics such as environmental economics, natural resource economics, energy economics, climate change economics, cost–benefit analysis, public economics and environmental regulation.

Students also take interdisciplinary courses drawn from environmental studies, policy and quantitative methods: applied environmental policy, geographic information systems (GIS) for environmental analysis, environmental law and institutions, and resource management. Practical learning is supported by a senior capstone, honours thesis or practicum that applies economic tools to a real-world environmental problem, and by opportunities for internships with regional agencies, NGOs or industry partners.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a strong academic record in secondary school with evidence of quantitative ability. Typical preparation includes high school mathematics (calculus preferred) and coursework in statistics or science where available. Admissions decisions consider the whole profile: grades, recommendation letters, personal statement and extracurricular activities that demonstrate interest in economics or environmental issues.

For international applicants, proof of English proficiency is usually required. Incoming students without prior exposure to formal econometrics or programming can begin with introductory quantitative courses; the department provides preparatory resources and advising to ensure success.
