What you'll study

This programme combines core informatics concepts with specialist study in medical illustration and visual communication. You study the science that underpins accurate anatomical and clinical representation together with the technical methods used to create and deliver illustrations, animations and interactive media for healthcare audiences.

• Foundations of Health Informatics: healthcare data standards, electronic health records, privacy, interoperability and clinical decision support principles.
• Biomedical Sciences for Visualisation: human anatomy, physiology and pathology common to medical illustration projects, with emphasis on clinical accuracy and terminology.
• Visual Communication and Design: principles of visual storytelling, information design, colour theory, typography and accessibility for patient and professional audiences.
• Digital Media and Production: 2D/3D modelling, medical animation, imaging techniques, vector/raster workflows and interactive multimedia development.
• Data Visualisation and Analytics: techniques for visualising clinical and research data, dashboards, statistical graphics and tools used to communicate quantitative information to clinicians and lay audiences.
• User-centred Design and Usability: conducting needs analysis, user testing and iterative design to produce materials suitable for patients, students and healthcare professionals.
• Research Methods and Ethics: research design, evidence appraisal, project management and ethical issues associated with clinical imagery, patient data and informed consent.
• Capstone or Practicum Project: a substantial applied project such as a portfolio of medical illustrations/animations, an interactive educational module, or an informatics-focused visualisation project developed in partnership with a clinical or educational partner.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Suitable academic backgrounds include fine art, graphic design, illustration, biology, biomedical sciences, nursing, allied health or another related discipline. Practical experience or coursework in drawing, digital media or life sciences is advantageous.

Typical application materials include an academic transcript, a personal statement describing career goals and relevant experience, and a portfolio demonstrating visual skills and project work relevant to medical or scientific illustration. Some applicants may be asked to complete a skills assessment or interview. Professional experience in healthcare, education or digital media can strengthen an application.
