What you'll study

This doctoral programme combines advanced research training, substantive nursing science and specialty coursework aligned to three pathways: Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing. Core components include rigorous research methods and statistics; epistemology and theory in nursing; health systems, policy and leadership; and advanced practicum or teaching experiences tailored to each pathway.

• Research methods and statistics: quantitative methods (including biostatistics and longitudinal analysis), qualitative methodologies, mixed-methods design and research ethics.
• Nursing theory and science: development and testing of nursing middle-range and grand theories, translational science and evidence synthesis.
• Nursing Administration pathway: organisational behaviour, health care finance and economics, strategic leadership, quality improvement and systems-level implementation science.
• Nursing Research pathway: advanced grant writing, intervention development, clinical trial design and measurement development.
• Clinical Nursing pathway: advanced clinical scholarship, population health and specialised clinical practicum or dissertation work that advances clinical practice guidelines.
• Professional development: pedagogy for nurse educators, grant preparation, dissemination skills and interprofessional collaboration.
• Dissertation: independent original research under faculty supervision culminating in a doctoral dissertation and defence.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) licensure and a graduate degree in nursing (typically an MSN) or equivalent preparation that demonstrates readiness for doctoral-level study. Candidates with an exceptional BSN and substantial research or clinical experience may be considered where the programme allows; consult the College of Nursing for specific pathway options.

• Academic transcripts demonstrating strong graduate-level performance.
• A curriculum vitae or resume outlining clinical, teaching and research experience.
• A statement of purpose describing research interests, career goals and fit with faculty expertise.
• Letters of recommendation (usually two to three) from academic and/or professional referees.
• Writing sample, publication record or evidence of scholarly activity where available.
• Proof of RN licensure in the United States (or country of practice) and relevant clinical experience.
• Some applicants may be asked to provide GRE scores; requirements vary by cohort and pathway. International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency where applicable.

Admission is competitive and normally includes an interview with faculty to discuss research fit and supervisory arrangements. Funding for doctoral study is commonly provided through research or teaching assistantships and should be discussed with the programme.
