What you'll study

The PhD curriculum is research-intensive and combines advanced theoretical foundations with rigorous methods training and a sustained independent research project (dissertation). Core study areas include advanced nursing theory, quantitative and qualitative research methods, biostatistics, research ethics, and scholarly writing. Students follow one of the programme pathways—Nursing Administration, Nursing Research or Clinical Nursing—which tailors elective study and practica to leadership, investigator-driven research, or clinical scholarship respectively.

• Core modules and themes: nursing theory and philosophical foundations, advanced research design, grant writing, data analysis and interpretation, health policy and systems, and ethical issues in human research.
• Nursing Administration pathway: organisational behaviour and leadership, healthcare finance and resource management, quality improvement, and strategic planning for nursing services.
• Nursing Research pathway: advanced quantitative methods, longitudinal and mixed-methods designs, research dissemination and translation, and preparation for external grant competitions.
• Clinical Nursing pathway: advanced clinical scholarship, translational research methods, clinical practicum or partnerships with clinical sites, and development of evidence-based protocols.
• Dissertation: each candidate completes an original, peer-reviewable research project under faculty supervision that contributes to nursing science or practice and culminates in a written thesis and oral defence.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a master's degree in nursing or a closely related health field from an accredited institution and to be a registered/licensed nurse in their jurisdiction. Typical requirements include a strong academic record at master’s level, relevant professional experience (often several years in clinical practice, education or management), a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, and academic references.

Additional expectations may include demonstration of research potential (for example, prior publications or a research proposal), satisfactory performance in any required admissions interview, and evidence of English language proficiency where applicable. Some applicants may be asked to supply GRE scores if specified by the programme or to undertake preparatory bridging work if their prior qualifications do not fully meet programme prerequisites.
