What you'll study

This major combines broad training in historical methods with specialised study of medieval and early modern Europe. You will study political, religious and cultural transformations from late antiquity through the Reformation and into the Enlightenment, focussing on developments such as the rise of Christian institutions, medieval urban life, manuscript culture, early print culture, gender and family, ritual and festival, and the cultural dimensions of exploration and colonisation.

• Core methods and skills: introduction to historical research, historiography, archival methods, palaeography and source analysis.
• Chronological and thematic modules: Medieval Europe, The High Middle Ages, Late Medieval Society, The Renaissance, Reformation and Counter-Reformation, Early Modern Social and Cultural History.
• Regional and comparative modules: England, France, Germany, Iberia and the Italian peninsula; comparison of urban and rural cultures across regions.
• Specialist options: manuscript and book history, art and material culture, medieval religion and theology, witchcraft and popular belief, gender and family history, law and governance.
• Languages: introductory or intermediate Latin and modern European languages appropriate to primary-source work (commonly German, French or Spanish).
• Capstone: senior seminar and a research project or thesis based on primary sources, often including archival work or digital history components.

The programme is taught through a mix of lectures, small seminars, primary-source workshops and independent research. Students are encouraged to take interdisciplinary courses in literature, theology, art history and archaeology and to pursue internships in museums, archives or historic sites.
