What you'll study

The programme builds a foundation in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, advanced econometrics and quantitative methods, then applies those tools to environmental and resource problems. Core modules typically include Microeconomic Theory, Applied Econometrics, Environmental and Resource Economics, and Cost–Benefit Analysis. Electives and special‑topic courses often cover Energy Economics, Climate Policy and Economics, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Valuation Methods, and Regulatory Economics.

Students can normally choose between a thesis (research) route and a practicum or capstone (policy/applied) route. The thesis option emphasises independent research using primary or secondary data and culminates in a supervised thesis. The practicum/capstone emphasises applied policy analysis and often involves a project for an external agency, local government or non‑profit. Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelor’s degree, preferably in economics, environmental economics, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or another quantitative discipline. Strong performance in undergraduate coursework in calculus, intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics and introductory statistics or econometrics is normally expected. Where undergraduate preparation is weaker, applicants may be admitted conditionally and required to complete preparatory coursework.

Typical supporting documents required for admission include academic transcripts, a statement of purpose outlining interests in environmental economics and policy, two or three letters of recommendation, and a current CV or résumé. Standardised test requirements (such as the GRE) vary and may be waived in some cases; international applicants will need to demonstrate English proficiency according to the university’s policies.
