What you'll study

The programme offers a balance of survey courses and specialised modules that trace political, religious, social and cultural developments in Europe from the fall of Rome through the early modern period. You will develop skills in critical reading of primary sources, historical argumentation, and research methods.

• Core history foundations: introductory surveys in world and western history, historical methods and historiography, and a capstone research seminar.
• Medieval Europe modules: topics such as early medieval kingdoms, the Carolingian world, medieval institutions, everyday life in the Middle Ages, and the history of medieval religion and art.
• Early modern Europe modules: courses covering the Reformation and confessionalisation, state formation and diplomacy, the Renaissance, early modern intellectual and cultural history, and the rise of colonial empires.
• Skills and methods: palaeography and manuscript studies, Latin for historians (introductory), archival research methods, and quantitative and qualitative approaches to historical evidence.
• Electives and interdisciplinary options: modules from literature, art history, religious studies and political science to contextualise cultural change; opportunities for language study to support primary-source work.
• Practical experience: independent research projects, a senior thesis or capstone project, and opportunities for internships at archives, museums, or local heritage organisations.

Entry requirements

Applicants for the BA programme are expected to hold an accredited secondary school diploma or equivalent. Typical admissions considerations include academic transcripts, a record of humanities or social-science coursework where available, and a demonstrated ability to write and analyse texts.

• Successful applicants usually present a solid high-school academic record with strengths in history, English or related subjects.
