What you'll study

The programme combines advanced seminars in medieval and early modern European cultural history with methodological training and a significant research component. You will study topics such as the social and intellectual history of medieval Christendom, late medieval urban culture, the Renaissance and humanism, the religious and cultural transformations of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, early modern political culture, and the history of art, print and material culture.

• Core research and methods: seminars on historiography, historical research methods, archival practice, palaeography and codicology, and quantitative and qualitative approaches to cultural history.
• Period and thematic seminars: focused courses on medieval religion and society, chivalry and court culture, early modern intellectual currents, gender and family in Europe, print culture and the book, and cross-cultural contacts between Europe and neighbouring regions.
• Language and source work: opportunities to develop reading competence in primary languages relevant to your research (for example Latin, French, German, Spanish or Italian) and guided work with primary sources and manuscript materials.
• Research project or thesis: a substantial independent research project or thesis supervised by faculty, demonstrating mastery of primary sources and historiographical debate.
• Professional preparation: seminars or modules on teaching history, public history practice, digital humanities tools, and preparation for archival or museum work.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a bachelor's degree in history or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution and to demonstrate academic preparation for graduate-level work. Typical application materials include official transcripts, a statement of purpose describing research interests and how they fit the programme, two or three letters of recommendation from academic or professional referees, and a writing sample demonstrating capacity for sustained historical analysis.

International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English through an approved test or equivalent credential. Where appropriate, applicants may be asked to show prior coursework or language study relevant to medieval and early modern European sources; conditional or preparatory language study can sometimes be arranged in consultation with faculty.
