The Public Policy Analysis curriculum emphasizes both quantitative methods and substantive policy domains. Core study typically includes microeconomics for policy, statistics and data analysis, research design and causal inference, public policy ethics, and law and institutions. Students take classes in computational methods (such as programming for data analysis), econometrics or applied statistics, and courses that cover policy areas like environmental policy, health policy, education policy and urban/regional policy.

The programme is intentionally interdisciplinary: students draw on Harvey Mudd’s strengths in mathematics, computer science and engineering while also taking social-science courses that develop qualitative research and policy interpretation skills. Learning formats include classroom lectures, problem sets, lab-based data projects, case studies, and policy simulations.

A major component is a capstone research project or thesis in which students define a policy question, assemble and analyse data, and present evidence-based recommendations. Many students complement coursework with internships, practicum placements or collaborative projects with faculty and community partners.

Entry requirements

Admissions to Harvey Mudd College are selective and consider each applicant holistically. Competitive applicants typically demonstrate strong academic preparation, especially in mathematics (calculus) and quantitative reasoning, as well as coursework in social sciences or writing. Successful candidates usually present:

• High-school transcripts showing rigorous coursework (including mathematics and laboratory or quantitative classes).
• Evidence of quantitative ability, such as completion of calculus or advanced mathematics and experience with data-oriented projects or coursework.

Harvey Mudd recognises a range of qualifications from different education systems (for example, A-levels, International Baccalaureate, or national high-school diplomas) and evaluates them in the context of the applicant’s school. Prospective students whose first language is not English should demonstrate readiness for instruction in English.
