What you'll study

The programme investigates how people, ideas, goods and institutions move across borders and how those movements shape places and lives. Coursework combines social science and humanities perspectives, emphasising comparative analysis, ethical reflection and applied research.

• Core topics: international relations, comparative politics, global political economy, development studies, human rights, and global governance.
• Methods and skills: qualitative and quantitative research methods, GIS basics, statistics for social sciences, policy analysis and academic writing.
• Cultural and area studies: regional studies (such as Latin America, Europe, Asia or Africa), migration and diaspora studies, transnational cultural flows and language study.
• Experiential learning: internship placements with NGOs, public sector bodies or businesses; community-engaged projects in the Pittsburgh region; and a capstone research project or practicum in the final year.
• Optional elements: study abroad semesters, advanced language certificates, and elective modules in sustainability, public health, journalism or business to tailor the degree to specific career interests.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a completed secondary school qualification that is equivalent to a high school diploma. Admissions consider academic transcripts, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Specific GPA or grade requirements vary by applicant background and are assessed as part of the holistic application process.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be asked to demonstrate English proficiency through accepted tests or equivalent qualifications; exemptions may apply for students with prior study in English.
