What you'll study

This MA combines intensive studio practice with critical theory and professional development. You will work on self-directed projects while following structured modules that support research, materials and processes, and presentation skills. Typical areas of study include:

• Studio Practice and Making: advanced workshops in ceramics, textiles, metalwork, wood, surface processes and mixed media; exploration of craft and material-led methodologies.
• Contextual and Critical Studies: design history, contemporary debates in applied arts, sustainability and ethics in making, and critical writing skills.
• Research Methods: practice-led research approaches, qualitative methods, research planning and documentation leading to a substantial written or practice-based dissertation.
• Professional Practice and Enterprise: portfolio development, brand and business planning, exhibition curation, intellectual property and routes to market including commissions, galleries and digital platforms.
• Collaborative Projects and Industry Engagement: short collaborations with external partners, client-facing briefs and opportunities for placements or residencies.
• Major Project / Final Exhibition: a sustained, self-initiated project that demonstrates technical proficiency, conceptual rigour and professional-ready presentation, typically presented in a public show or industry-facing event.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant undergraduate degree (for example in design, fine art, craft, textiles or a related subject) or to demonstrate equivalent professional experience and a strong portfolio of work. Typical criteria include:

• A good honours degree from a recognised institution (2:1 is commonly expected, though 2:2 with strong professional experience may be considered).
• A portfolio that evidences technical skill, creative development and conceptual thinking; portfolios should include process work as well as finished pieces.
• A personal statement outlining your motivation, artistic direction and proposed areas of study.
• References that speak to your academic or professional suitability for postgraduate study.
• International applicants will need to meet the university’s English language requirements (evidence of an approved English qualification is usually required).
