What you'll study

The programme provides a foundation in molecular and cellular neurobiology, systems and behavioural neuroscience, and cognitive and computational approaches. Core coursework typically covers neuroanatomy, cellular neurophysiology, synaptic transmission, neural development, and sensory and motor systems. Students also take advanced classes in topics such as neuropharmacology, neural networks, learning and memory, and disorders of the nervous system.

Quantitative and methodological training is emphasised: courses in statistics, experimental design, programming for data analysis, and computational modelling are integrated with laboratory practicums. Hands-on lab experiences include molecular techniques, electrophysiology, imaging methods and behavioural assays. Many students complete an independent research project or senior thesis under faculty supervision, and electives allow cross-disciplinary study with psychology, biology, chemistry, computer science and mathematics.

The curriculum is flexible, enabling students to pursue concentrations or minors (for example in cognitive neuroscience, computational neuroscience, or neural engineering) and to select seminars on specialised topics such as neuroethics, developmental neurobiology or neurodegenerative disease.

Entry requirements

Admission to Brandeis is competitive and based on a holistic review of academic achievement and potential. Successful applicants typically demonstrate strong preparation in the sciences and mathematics — for example, high-school coursework in biology, chemistry and algebra or calculus. International qualifications equivalent to a US high-school diploma are accepted.

Applicants are expected to submit academic transcripts and letters of recommendation; application essays that convey interest in scientific inquiry and research are important. Standardised tests may be optional depending on admissions policy in effect at the time of application. Practical laboratory experience, participation in science clubs or summer research programmes strengthens an application. Transfer applicants should present college coursework in biology, chemistry and mathematics along with college transcripts and faculty recommendations.

Career prospects

Graduates of the neurobiology and neurosciences programme move into a range of careers. Many pursue graduate study or professional degrees — including PhDs in neuroscience or related biomedical sciences and MD/DO pathways for clinical careers. Others enter research roles in academia, government laboratories, or the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, working on drug discovery, translational research, neural engineering or neuroimaging.

The quantitative and computational elements of the degree also prepare alumni for careers in data science, bioinformatics and computational modelling.
