This Master's in Economics with a focus on Environmental Economics and Policy develops applied economic skills for analysing environmental problems, natural resource management and sustainability policy. It suits students who want to combine rigorous economic theory and econometrics with policy analysis for careers in government, consultancy, NGOs or further academic study.
The programme blends core graduate training in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory and applied econometrics with specialised coursework in environmental and resource economics. Typical modules include Advanced Microeconomic Theory, Applied Econometrics, Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, Cost–Benefit and Cost–Effectiveness Analysis, Energy and Resource Policy, and Environmental Policy Design and Evaluation. Students also study quantitative methods for policy analysis, research methods, and elective topics such as land use economics, climate policy, and valuation of ecosystem services.
Students may choose a thesis route or a non-thesis capstone/practicum option. The thesis path emphasises original empirical research under faculty supervision, while the practicum/capstone emphasises applied policy work, often involving a project with a public agency, NGO or regional industry partner.
Graduates pursue roles where applied economic analysis informs environmental and resource decisions. Common career paths include environmental economist or analyst in government departments and agencies, policy analyst for environmental NGOs, consultant specialising in environmental impact assessment or natural resource management, analyst in energy and utilities firms, and positions in international development organisations focused on sustainability.
Many students also use the degree as preparation for doctoral study in economics, environmental economics, public policy or related fields. The programme’s quantitative training and applied project experience are valuable for careers that require economic modelling, benefit–cost analysis and evidence-based policy evaluation.
