What you'll study

The PhD curriculum combines advanced coursework, qualifying examinations, pedagogical training and an original dissertation. Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a master's degree in English, literature, rhetoric/composition, or a closely related field. A strong academic record in previous graduate study, a writing sample (typically a chapter-length critical essay or paper), a clear statement of research interests, and letters of recommendation are required. Candidates with only a bachelor's degree but with exceptional preparation may be considered in some cases.

The programme evaluates applicants holistically. Standardised test scores (such as the GRE) may be optional or considered on a case-by-case basis—check the department for current guidance. International applicants must demonstrate English-language proficiency according to university policies.
