What you'll study

The programme combines core education theory, subject-specific methods and progressive field experiences. You will study foundations of education, child and adolescent development, classroom assessment, inclusive and differentiated instruction, educational psychology, classroom management and curriculum design. Subject-methods courses are available for elementary and secondary specialisms (for example, literacy methods, mathematics methods, science methods and social studies methods), along with electives in areas such as special education, English language learners/TESOL, educational technology and multicultural education.

A central component is sequential clinical practice: early observation and practicum hours in partner schools followed by a full semester of supervised student teaching. Coursework emphasises evidence-based instructional strategies, formative assessment, culturally responsive pedagogy and legal/ethical issues in education. Students also complete preparation activities for state licensure, including professional portfolios, performance assessments and preparation for any required certification exams.

Applicants typically need a high school diploma or equivalent with a competitive academic record. Admissions consider overall GPA and strength of academic preparation, especially in English and mathematics. Secondary candidates are expected to demonstrate subject-matter competence in their intended teaching area through coursework or examinations.

Additional expectations for admission or progression into the teacher preparation sequence often include a satisfactory background check, documentation of immunisations or TB screening where required, a basic skills check or benchmark GPA, and instructor recommendations or a personal statement. Transfer students should meet the university transfer-credit policies and usually need a minimum transferable GPA.
