What you'll study

The PhD programme combines advanced coursework, comprehensive examinations, pedagogy training, and an extended original dissertation. Students pursue a customised course of study in areas such as medieval and Renaissance literature, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British literature, American literature, modernism and contemporary literature, African American and African Diasporic literatures, postcolonial studies, gender and sexuality studies, environmental and ecocritical approaches, rhetorical theory, and digital humanities.

Typical components of the programme include:

• Coursework: Seminars in primary texts, theory, and research methods with emphasis on developing historiographic and theoretical sophistication.
• Language competence: Training in and/or demonstration of reading proficiency in one or more relevant research languages where required by the student’s field.
• Comprehensive examinations: Written and/or oral exams or equivalent field assessments that establish readiness for independent research.
• Teaching practicum: Supervised teaching experience as a graduate instructor or teaching assistant, including pedagogy workshops and mentoring.
• Dissertation: Preparation and defence of a sustained original research project under the supervision of a faculty committee.
• Interdisciplinary work: Opportunities to take courses and collaborate with centres across the university—such as digital scholarship, environmental studies, or theatre—and to pursue archival, public humanities, or digital projects.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a strong bachelor’s degree in English or a closely related field; many successful applicants also hold a master’s degree. Applications typically require the following materials:

• Academic transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
• Statement of purpose outlining research interests, fit with departmental faculty, and professional goals.
• Writing sample (usually 20–30 pages) that demonstrates analytic and research skills; dissertations or extended seminar papers are appropriate.
• Letters of recommendation (generally three) from faculty or others who can attest to scholarly potential and readiness for doctoral work.
• Curriculum vitae listing academic background, publications, teaching experience, and relevant activities.
• Language information: If your proposed research requires foreign-language competence, indicate current proficiency and plans for meeting departmental requirements.
