Core graduate seminars typically cover theatre history and historiography, performance and cultural theory, research methods in theatre and critical approaches to dramaturgy and directing. Beyond taught modules, the degree emphasises sustained research through comprehensive examinations, a taught or supervised pedagogy practicum, and a dissertation that makes an original contribution to the field. Candidates pursuing practice-led research can integrate artistic projects—for example directing, dramaturgy, or design work—alongside written analysis. Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant master’s degree (for example in theatre, drama, performance studies or a closely related humanities discipline). Selection is based on evidence of academic potential and, where relevant, creative accomplishment. Typical application materials include:

• A research proposal outlining doctoral project aims, questions and methodologies.
• A writing sample demonstrating scholarly ability (such as a journal article, thesis chapter or critical essay); practice-based applicants may also submit a creative portfolio or documentation of recent work.
