What you'll study

The programme centres on an original, thesis-based research project in an area of physiotherapy or rehabilitation science. Core study includes contemporary research methods and design (quantitative and qualitative), advanced biostatistics, implementation science and research translation, and the development of a coherent programme of research that contributes to clinical knowledge.

Typical areas of research supervision and project focus include musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, paediatrics, gerontology and frailty, pain science, sports physiotherapy, health services research and telehealth/technology-enabled care. Coursework components, where required, are tailored to support the research project and may cover advanced clinical assessment, trial design, systematic review and meta-analysis, qualitative interviewing, outcome measurement and health economics.

Students complete a substantial doctoral thesis presenting original research, and are expected to disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. The degree is offered with options for full-time or part-time study to accommodate practising clinicians.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to be registered physiotherapists with relevant clinical experience. Typical academic entry criteria include a research master’s degree or equivalent substantial research training, or a bachelor honours degree with a first-class or high second-class result and demonstrated research capability. Prior publications or evidence of research activity strengthens an application.

Applications usually require a clear research proposal or statement of research interests, a prospective supervisor or expressions of supervisory support, academic transcripts, curriculum vitae, and referee reports. International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency to the level required by the University. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission; selection is competitive and based on the quality of the proposed research and alignment with available supervision and resources.
