What you'll study

The programme combines core training in policy analysis and research methods with elective study across governance, economics and specialised policy fields. You will learn how to frame policy problems, apply quantitative and qualitative methods, undertake program evaluation and communicate advice to diverse stakeholders.

• Core topics: public policy theory and practice, policy analysis, public sector governance, ethics and accountability.
• Research methods: applied statistics for policy, econometrics or quantitative methods, qualitative methods and mixed‑methods approaches.
• Evaluation and implementation: program evaluation, cost–benefit analysis, implementation science and regulatory impact assessment.
• Specialist electives: environmental and resource policy, Indigenous policy, health policy, education policy, urban and regional policy, international development, or energy and resources policy.
• Capstone or thesis: options typically include a practitioner‑oriented capstone project with a government or community partner, or a supervised research dissertation addressing a substantive policy question.

The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, case studies and applied projects. Students are encouraged to undertake a practicum or internship where possible to gain direct policy workplace experience.

Entry requirements

Admission usually requires a recognised bachelor’s degree with satisfactory academic performance. Many successful applicants hold degrees in social sciences, economics, law, public administration or related fields. Relevant professional experience in government, community organisations or the private sector is viewed favourably and can strengthen an application.

• Applicants should demonstrate quantitative literacy; prior study in economics, statistics or research methods is advantageous.
• There is usually provision for applicants without a directly related undergraduate degree if they have substantive professional experience in policy or allied sectors.
• All applicants must meet the university's English language requirements; international applicants provide recognised English proficiency evidence.
• Selection may consider academic transcripts, CV, references and a personal statement outlining policy interests and goals.
