This programme combines theoretical and applied study in hydrodynamics, coastal processes, marine geotechnics and structural design for offshore and coastal environments. You will study wave and tidal theory, coastal morphodynamics, numerical modelling of coastal and ocean systems, design of offshore structures and foundations, and coastal protection and management. Coursework typically includes modules in risk and reliability, environmental impact and regulatory frameworks, plus advanced numerical methods for simulation and optimisation.
The course structure normally includes a set of core units, elective units that allow specialisation (for example in marine renewable energy, port engineering or coastal protection), and a substantial capstone component such as an industry-focused project or a research dissertation. Practical laboratory work, field measurement techniques and use of industry-standard software (for example for wave modelling and finite-element analysis) are integral to the curriculum.
Applicants are expected to hold a recognised bachelor degree in engineering, science or a related technical discipline. Candidates with an engineering background in civil, mechanical, naval architecture or environmental engineering are particularly suitable. Entry usually requires a competitive academic record at undergraduate level; relevant professional experience can strengthen an application.
All applicants whose previous degree was not taught in English must demonstrate competence in English through an approved test. Specific unit prerequisites may apply for certain electives; applicants with gaps in prior knowledge may be asked to complete bridging units.
