The DForenPsy is an integrated programme combining advanced taught content, supervised applied practice and a substantial doctoral-level research thesis. Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised psychology degree and have completed the BPS-accredited Stage 1 forensic psychology component (for example an MSc in Forensic Psychology or its equivalence) giving Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership where required. Relevant, substantive applied experience in forensic or related clinical settings is typically required, along with professional references that can speak to the applicant's suitability for high-intensity clinical training.

Other application requirements usually include a research proposal or statement of research interests, evidence of ability to undertake doctoral research, and a satisfactory interview with programme staff. International applicants must demonstrate that their previous qualifications and practical experience meet the programme's entry requirements and that they have the requisite English language competence. Admission is subject to suitability for placements that may require background checks and occupational health clearance.
