What you'll study

This programme covers core areas of psychological science and research skills. In the early years you will study introductory topics such as biological bases of behaviour, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and personality. Research methods and quantitative skills are threaded throughout the degree, with subjects in statistics, experimental design and data analysis.

In later years you will move into more specialised topics and applied areas. Typical subjects include psychological assessment, psychopathology and clinical psychology, health psychology, organisational and industrial psychology, forensic psychology, and advanced cognitive and neuropsychology. Ethical issues, professional practice and cultural considerations in psychological work are emphasised across the curriculum.

The degree is structured to prepare students for honours or further professional training. Many students undertake a substantial research project or capstone placement in their final year, and there are elective options to tailor study toward specific interests such as child development, ageing, mental health or workplace wellbeing.

Entry requirements

Entry is based on completion of a recognised secondary qualification or an equivalent pathway. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong academic performance in their senior secondary studies. Satisfactory proficiency in English is required.

Recommended preparation includes studies in English and mathematics/statistics; science subjects can also be advantageous given the programme’s emphasis on experimental methods and biological bases of behaviour. Alternative entry pathways such as foundation or bridging programs, interstate tertiary transfer and recognition of prior learning are available for eligible applicants.

International applicants must meet equivalent academic standards and the university’s English language requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates find opportunities in a wide range of settings. While registration as a practising clinical or clinical neuropsychologist requires additional postgraduate and accredited training, the Bachelor of Psychology prepares graduates for roles such as research assistant, case worker, community support officer, human resources assistant, rehabilitation officer, and roles in market research, education and policy development.

Other common pathways include continuing into an honours year and then postgraduate coursework or research degrees (for example professional master’s programs or doctoral training), which are necessary for many specialist and registered clinical roles. The degree’s strong research and statistical components also suit careers in data analysis and evidence-based program evaluation.
