What you'll study

The program combines foundational social science disciplines with professional social work theory, practice and research. Core topics typically include human development and socialisation, social policy and welfare systems, social work practice methods, ethics and professional standards, culturally responsive practice with Indigenous and diverse communities, and research methods for social work.

Study is organised progressively from introductory modules in social welfare and human behaviour through to advanced practice and specialised streams. The honours year focuses on advanced coursework and an independent research project or dissertation under academic supervision, developing skills in research design, critical appraisal and evidence-informed practice.

A defining feature of the degree is professional field education: students undertake multiple supervised placements in a variety of settings such as mental health services, hospitals, child and family services, community organisations, aged care and corrections. Placements integrate classroom learning with hands-on practice under the guidance of qualified social work supervisors.

Entry requirements

Entry pathways include direct admission from secondary school, prior tertiary study, or alternative admission schemes. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong academic achievement and the aptitude for professional practice. Domestic applicants typically apply through the state tertiary admissions centre and international applicants must present an equivalent qualification and evidence of English language proficiency.

Because the degree includes professional placements, students must meet non-academic requirements such as a criminal history check, child safety screening, and up-to-date immunisations or health clearance before undertaking placements. Admission to the honours year normally requires satisfactory academic performance in the preceding years and a successful application to the honours stream.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to apply for membership of the national professional social work body and can practise in a wide range of settings. Common early-career roles include case worker, family support practitioner, mental health clinician, hospital social worker, child protection worker, community development officer and aged care coordinator.

With experience and further study graduates may move into specialist practice areas, policy and program development, management roles, research, or academic careers. The program’s emphasis on research in the honours year also provides a pathway into postgraduate research and higher degree study.
