What you'll study

This master’s combines core theoretical topics with empirical and methodological training. You will study areas such as syntax, phonology, morphology, semantics and pragmatics alongside modules in psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and language acquisition. Training in data collection and analysis is integrated through courses on field methods, experimental design and corpus linguistics, and there is strong provision of computational approaches including basic programming for linguistic analysis and applications in natural language processing.

The programme is research-led and typically includes a mix of advanced seminars, practical lab work and independent study. The curriculum culminates in a substantial research project or master’s thesis supervised by staff from the University of Groningen’s linguistics research groups, giving you experience of designing and carrying out original research.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a bachelor's degree in linguistics, language science, cognitive science or a closely related subject. Candidates with degrees in allied fields (for example, computer science, psychology or modern languages) who can demonstrate sufficient background in core linguistic topics and quantitative or formal methods may also be considered.

Typical application materials include academic transcripts, a curriculum vitae, a letter of motivation and at least one academic reference. International applicants whose previous degree was not taught in English must provide recognised evidence of English proficiency. Where relevant, applicants may be asked to provide examples of prior academic work or to participate in an interview.

Graduates from this programme follow a range of career paths. Many continue into doctoral research in linguistics, cognitive science or computational linguistics. Others work outside academia in language technology and natural language processing, speech and text annotation, corpus management, educational materials development, curriculum design, language testing and assessment, or in policy roles concerned with language planning and multilingualism.

Skills developed on the programme — including advanced analysis of linguistic data, experimental design, programming for data analysis and academic writing — are also valued in research institutes, publishing, information services and technology companies that process language data.
