What you'll study

The program builds a core grounding in microeconomics and macroeconomics alongside quantitative and empirical skills. Early subjects typically cover introductory micro and macro theory and basic econometrics, while later study advances into applied econometrics, forecasting and policy evaluation. Students also study quantitative methods, mathematics for economists and statistical software applications to analyse real datasets.

Elective options allow specialisation and breadth: common elective themes include econometrics and data analytics, international trade and finance, public economics and taxation, development economics, environmental and resource economics, industrial organisation and behavioural economics. Many students complete a capstone or research project in their final year that applies theory and quantitative techniques to a substantive economic question.

The degree is often structured as a three‑year full‑time programme with a mix of compulsory core units, a chosen major or specialisation and free electives. Students may have access to embedded professional practice opportunities, internships or industry projects, and can pursue an honours year or postgraduate study after completing the undergraduate sequence.

Entry requirements

Entry is based on standard university admission pathways. Domestic applicants are typically considered on their secondary school qualification (ATAR or state equivalent) or via recognised tertiary study; mature‑age and alternative entry pathways are available and may consider work experience and other qualifications. International applicants must meet UTS academic entry standards and demonstrate English language proficiency through an accepted test or equivalent qualification.

Mathematics or strong quantitative background is recommended because of the programme's emphasis on statistics, econometrics and mathematical reasoning. Some students begin with introductory bridging or preparation subjects if they do not have recent study in mathematics.

Career prospects

Graduates develop skills valued across public, private and not‑for‑profit sectors. Typical roles include economist, data or business analyst, policy advisor, research officer, financial analyst, market researcher and management consultant. Skills in econometric modelling, forecasting and program evaluation are applicable to central and state government agencies, regulatory bodies, think tanks, international organisations, banks, consulting firms and industry.
