What you'll study

The programme builds from core undergraduate mathematics in the early years to advanced, specialised masters-level topics in the final year, with one full academic year spent studying at an approved overseas partner. In year one you consolidate essential foundations such as calculus, linear algebra and introductory analysis alongside problem-solving and computing skills. Year two develops these foundations with courses in real analysis, complex analysis, differential equations, probability and introduction to algebra, and typically offers options in numerical methods and modelling.

The year abroad gives you the opportunity to take mathematics courses at another university, experience a different academic culture and, where offered, work on projects or supervised research that may feed into your final-year dissertation. Your study abroad credit counts towards the MMath programme and is integrated with your overall course plan.

On return for the final year you study masters-level modules that may include measure and integration, functional analysis, advanced algebra, partial differential equations, stochastic processes, optimisation and computational mathematics. You also complete an extended individual project or dissertation under the supervision of York staff, allowing you to pursue a specialist topic in pure or applied mathematics.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a strong background in mathematics. Typical entrants have completed advanced secondary-level mathematics (for example A-level Mathematics and ideally Further Mathematics, or equivalent international qualifications) and demonstrate competence in algebra, calculus and problem solving. The department looks for evidence of ability to cope with abstract reasoning and sustained mathematical study.

Acceptable qualifications include school-leaving credentials from different national systems (such as the International Baccalaureate, national high-school diplomas with relevant advanced mathematics, or recognised international equivalents). Mature applicants and those with non-standard qualifications are considered on an individual basis; relevant prior study or experience in mathematics or a quantitative discipline strengthens an application.

Because the programme includes a year abroad, applicants should meet the language and visa prerequisites of partner institutions; where necessary, English language competence must be demonstrated to the level required for university study.
