What you'll study

This degree combines core biomedical and professional practice subjects with specialist units in imaging and therapeutic technologies. Early coursework covers anatomy and physiology, human pathology, radiation physics and radiobiology, professional and ethical practice, and patient-centred care. Core imaging and therapy topics include radiographic technique and image interpretation, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) fundamentals, radiation therapy planning and delivery, nuclear medicine instrumentation and radiopharmacy principles, radiation safety and quality assurance.

Practical learning is a major component: students complete progressive clinical placements in hospitals and imaging centres, gaining hands-on experience with diagnostic radiography, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy equipment. The program also includes simulation-based training, coursework in research methods and opportunities to undertake a research project or honours pathway where available.

Entry requirements

Admission is typically based on a successful completion of senior secondary school (or equivalent) with satisfactory English competency plus demonstrated background in a science subject such as chemistry, physics or mathematics. Curtin considers domestic applicants by tertiary entrance ranks and may also accept recognised diploma qualifications, university transfer or mature-age applicants with relevant experience.

Successful applicants must meet professional suitability requirements for clinical placement which commonly include immunisation and health checks, current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification, a criminal history check and compliance with workplace screening. International applicants must meet Curtin's English language requirements and equivalent academic qualifications.

Graduates are eligible to seek registration and employment as medical radiation practitioners and work in a variety of clinical settings. Common roles include diagnostic radiographer/medical imaging technologist, radiation therapist, and nuclear medicine technologist.
