What you'll study

The DrPharm is a research-focused doctorate centred on an independent, original thesis supervised by Curtin academic staff. Candidates undertake an in-depth research project in areas such as medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical formulation and delivery, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, clinical pharmacy and pharmacotherapy, pharmacoeconomics, regulatory science and translational medicine.

Although the programme is primarily thesis-based, students commonly complete coursework or professional development components tailored to their project needs. Typical subjects and training elements include:

• Advanced research methods — experimental design, statistics and data analysis strategies relevant to laboratory, clinical and population studies.
• Pharmacology and pharmacokinetics — mechanistic studies, modelling and dose optimisation.
• Drug formulation and delivery — novel delivery systems, stability and scale-up considerations.
• Clinical pharmacy and therapeutics — medication safety, clinical trials, therapeutic drug monitoring and evidence-based practice.
• Regulatory, ethical and translational aspects — regulatory pathways, good laboratory and clinical practice, research ethics and commercialisation.
• Communication and leadership — scientific writing, grant preparation, teaching or supervision skills and industry engagement.

Study is supervised and framed by regular progress reviews, seminars and opportunities to present at conferences. Candidates may work in laboratory, clinical or community settings depending on their research focus and collaborations.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a relevant masters by research, a first-class honours degree, or an equivalent qualification demonstrating research capability in pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, medicinal chemistry, clinical pharmacology or a closely related discipline. Experienced practising pharmacists with substantial research experience and a well-developed research proposal may also be considered.

Applicants must identify a suitable supervisor and provide a clear research proposal outlining aims, methods and expected outcomes. Academic transcripts, two or three academic referees, and evidence of research experience (publications, theses, or technical reports) strengthen applications. International applicants must meet Curtin's English language requirements.

Admission is subject to approval by the School and compliance with Curtin’s higher degree by research candidature policies. Candidates may be offered full-time or part-time enrolment; part-time candidates should ensure they can meet the research supervision and progress expectations.
