What you'll study

This programme covers the core biomedical sciences and clinical skills needed for health practice and for progression to a graduate medical degree. You will study human anatomy and physiology, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology and pathology alongside clinical communication, history-taking, clinical reasoning and basic procedural skills. Research methods, biostatistics and evidence-based practice are included to prepare you for scholarly projects and informed clinical decision-making.

• Foundational biomedical sciences – anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and cellular biology.
• Pathology and pharmacology – mechanisms of disease, common pathological conditions and principles of therapeutics.
• Clinical skills and communication – history-taking, physical examination basics, clinical reasoning and interprofessional communication.
• Research and public health – research design, statistics, epidemiology and health systems.
• Practical experience – simulated clinical training in skills laboratories and supervised placements in hospitals or community health settings.
• Capstone or honours option – a research project or advanced coursework in later years for students pursuing research or competitive entry to graduate medicine.

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and typically requires successful completion of senior secondary studies or an equivalent qualification, with particular emphasis on science subjects such as biology and chemistry. Applicants from non-school backgrounds may be assessed on completed tertiary study or recognised work experience in health-related fields.

Selection may take account of academic performance, a personal statement or portfolio, and interviews or other selection activities where applicable. Students whose goal is to progress into the Doctor of Medicine should be aware that admission to the MD is subject to meeting specified academic standards and any additional selection requirements set by the medical school.
