This graduate diploma combines taught coursework with extensive practical laboratory training to develop the technical and professional skills required in medical diagnostic laboratories. Core study areas typically include clinical chemistry, haematology, microbiology, immunology, transfusion science and molecular diagnostics. Modules also cover laboratory quality management, biosafety, clinical laboratory instrumentation and data interpretation.
The programme is delivered with a strong practical emphasis: students complete supervised benchwork in purpose-built teaching laboratories and undertake clinical placements in hospital or community diagnostic laboratories. Applicants are normally required to hold an accredited bachelor’s degree in a relevant science discipline, such as biomedical science, chemistry, microbiology, physiology or similar. Prior study in key subjects—typically chemistry and at least one biological science subject—is expected, with specified credit-level coursework in those areas.
Selection may take account of academic performance in relevant papers and the availability of clinical placement places. International applicants should demonstrate equivalent academic preparation and meet the University’s English-language requirements.
