INF252 is a bachelor-level informatics programme that builds core skills in programming, algorithms, data management and software development while introducing topics such as human–computer interaction, machine learning and systems design. It suits students who want a balanced, practically oriented degree that prepares them for software development, data work or further study in computing-related disciplines.
The programme covers the foundational areas of computer science and applied informatics, emphasising practical problem solving and software development. You will study modules in programming and data structures, algorithms, databases, web and mobile development, software engineering and systems programming. Complementary topics typically include human–computer interaction, information retrieval, basics of machine learning and statistics, and computer networks.
Teaching combines lectures, laboratory sessions, supervised programming exercises and group projects. Assessment is through a mixture of practical assignments, project reports, written examinations and oral presentations. In the final year you undertake an independent bachelor project under academic supervision, allowing you to specialise in an area such as software engineering, data science, visualisation, bioinformatics or interactive systems.
Applicants need a recognised upper secondary school qualification that meets the University of Bergen's general admission requirements for bachelor's programmes. A solid background in mathematics is normally required; courses in algebra, calculus and statistics at secondary level are expected. For international applicants, proof of English proficiency is required, and equivalent academic qualifications from the applicant's home country are assessed against Norwegian admission standards.
