What you'll study

The programme combines theoretical foundations of sustainable development with applied skills in policy, planning and evaluation. Core topics typically include the SDG framework and indicators, sustainability science and systems thinking, development policy and governance, research methods for sustainability, and monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) for development initiatives.

Students also study specialised modules that reflect contemporary challenges such as climate change adaptation and mitigation, resilient urban and rural development, sustainable livelihoods and value chains, and finance and economics for sustainable development. A distinctive element of Massey’s offering is emphasis on indigenous and Pacific perspectives on sustainability, including Te Ao Māori approaches to environmental management and community development.

The degree is completed with a substantial supervised research project or practicum that applies theory to a real‑world problem.
