What you'll study

The Bachelor of Education combines theoretical foundations of education with progressive, supervised classroom experience. Core study areas include learning and development, curriculum design and assessment, classroom management, and professional practice. You will study teaching methods across curriculum areas such as literacy and English, mathematics, science, social sciences and the arts, together with learning-centred approaches to behaviour and wellbeing.

The programme includes a sustained series of professional practice placements in partner schools that increase in length and responsibility across the degree. Specialised topics commonly covered are inclusive education and special learning needs, digital technologies in teaching, te reo Māori and tikanga Māori in education, assessment for learning, and research methods in education. Assessment typically combines coursework, practicum performance, reflective portfolios and a capstone professional inquiry.

Entry requirements

Applicants generally need to meet university entrance requirements from their secondary education or hold an equivalent tertiary qualification. Demonstrated literacy and numeracy competence are required. Mature applicants with relevant life or work experience are considered through the University’s alternative admission pathways.

Because the degree leads to professional practice in schools, successful applicants must be able to meet statutory and professional checks, which commonly include identity verification, a criminal history check, and health/fitness requirements for working with children. Schools hosting placements may also request vaccination or other health documentation. Selection may involve an interview or written statement demonstrating suitability for teaching and commitment to working with diverse learners.

Graduates are prepared to work as qualified classroom teachers in primary and intermediate school settings, subject to meeting the registration requirements of the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. Career pathways include classroom teaching, curriculum coordination, literacy and numeracy advisory roles, special education support, and leadership positions such as deputy or head of department after further experience or study.

Beyond school-based roles, graduates commonly move into educational support services, early childhood education (with additional qualifications where required), policy and curriculum development, education consultancy, community education and further postgraduate study such as a Graduate Diploma or Master’s in Education.
