What you'll study

This programme integrates core medical science subjects with population health disciplines. In the early years you study foundational biomedical topics such as cell biology, human anatomy and physiology, genetics, microbiology and pharmacology alongside modules in introductory epidemiology and biostatistics. Later stages emphasise applied population health and healthcare systems, with modules that typically include:

• Epidemiology and public health – principles of disease distribution, surveillance and prevention
• Biostatistics and research methods – quantitative and qualitative methods, data analysis and critical appraisal of research
• Clinical and pathological sciences – systems-based pathology, clinical case studies and laboratory skills
• Health policy, economics and ethics – organisation of health services, resource allocation and ethical frameworks
• Health informatics and data management – use of health records, large datasets and basic programming for health research
• Global and environmental health – determinants of health, infectious disease control and the health impact of environmental change
• Research project or dissertation – independent investigation under academic supervision, frequently linked to ongoing faculty research or NHS partners

The programme is delivered through lectures, laboratory practicals, workshops, case-based learning and small-group tutorials. Students gain hands-on experience in laboratory techniques, statistical software and public-health data analysis. There is often the option to undertake a placement year or a summer research placement with healthcare organisations or research groups, subject to availability.

Entry requirements

Typical entry is from school or college applicants with completed secondary qualifications. Indicative requirements include A-levels (or equivalent) with science or mathematics among subjects studied, and a set of qualifications at a standard comparable to A-level BBB–AAB depending on the applicant profile. The programme also welcomes applicants with vocational qualifications (BTEC), Access to HE diplomas, and international qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate an interest in medical science and population health through personal statements and references. Relevant work experience or voluntary activity in healthcare, public health, research or community settings strengthens an application. International applicants must meet English language requirements.
