What you'll study

This programme combines core studies in child development, pedagogy and curriculum with specialist modules focused on Welsh as a second language. Typical topics include language acquisition and bilingualism, Welsh language structure and phonology, classroom approaches to second-language teaching, play and learning in early childhood, assessment and differentiation, and inclusive practice for diverse classrooms. You will study research methods and critical perspectives in education, and complete regular school-based placements to apply theory in practice.

• Year 1: foundations in child development, introduction to pedagogy, basic Welsh language skills and classroom practice.
• Year 2: applied methods for teaching Welsh as an additional language, curriculum studies, assessment for learning and a longer school placement.
• Year 3: advanced topics such as bilingual education policy, leadership in education settings, a substantial research project or dissertation, and a final placement to demonstrate professional competence.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a recognised secondary qualification (such as A levels, BTEC or equivalent) and to demonstrate relevant experience of working with children or young people. Standard academic profiles vary; admissions tutors look for evidence of strong communication skills, commitment to working in education settings and the capacity for academic study. Applicants should hold GCSE (or equivalent) level English and mathematics. Because this degree focuses on Welsh as an additional language, applicants may be asked to demonstrate an interest in or basic competence in Welsh (for example a GCSE in Welsh or a language assessment) or be prepared to undertake language support during the course.

Mature applicants and those with vocational qualifications are welcome; interview and references are used to assess suitability for school placements.

Career prospects

Graduates go on to a range of roles in education and childhood services. Popular routes include progressing to initial teacher education to gain Qualified Teacher Status, working as teaching assistants or learning support staff, and roles in early years settings. Other career paths include Welsh language development officer, curriculum support, youth and community work, educational publishing and local authority educational services. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in education, applied linguistics or specialist areas such as special educational needs.
