What you'll study

This master's programme develops high-level competence in contemporary and historical French language and culture. Core study areas include advanced French language and stylistics, modern and classical French literature, francophone cultures, comparative literature, and applied and theoretical linguistics.

• Advanced French language and communication — accuracy and fluency in spoken and written French, register and discourse analysis, argumentation and presentation skills.
• Literature and cultural studies — close reading and critical approaches to modern and classical French texts, film and visual culture, francophone literatures from Africa, the Caribbean and Quebec, and interdisciplinary approaches to cultural history.
• Linguistics and sociolinguistics — phonology, syntax, semantics, language variation, language contact and policy, corpus-based methods.
• Translation and interpreting studies — techniques and practice in written translation, specialised translation (legal, technical, literary), and introduction to consecutive and sight interpreting.
• Didactics of French as a foreign language — curriculum design, classroom methodology, testing and assessment, use of technology in language teaching (for those interested in a teaching route).
• Research methods and MA thesis — training in academic research methods, critical bibliography, project design and completion of an independent master's thesis under supervisory guidance.

Teaching typically combines seminars, small-group tutorials, language laboratory work and supervised individual research. Optional modules and elective seminars let you tailor the programme towards translation, teaching, literary scholarship or linguistics.

Entry requirements

• A relevant bachelor's degree in French, modern languages, comparative literature, linguistics or a closely related field (or equivalent qualification demonstrating readiness for master's-level study).
• High level of French proficiency, normally equivalent to CEFR C1; applicants may be asked to provide a recognised language certificate or to demonstrate ability at interview/placement testing.
• Academic transcripts and a record of prior study in French-language modules; a strong performance in undergraduate coursework is expected.
• A brief CV and a personal statement outlining academic interests, proposed research directions and career objectives; applicants are sometimes invited to an interview (in person or online).
• Proof of prior academic competence in research methods can be advantageous for thesis-oriented applicants; those without a directly related BA may be admitted subject to completing bridging modules.
