What you'll study

This programme combines theoretical foundations with hands-on training in GIS, remote sensing and spatial analysis. You will study the principles of satellite and aerial image acquisition, digital image processing, spatial database design and management, plus advanced techniques in spatial modelling and geostatistics. Practical modules emphasise industry-standard software and programming for geospatial applications (including Python scripting), web mapping and mobile GIS, as well as data quality, metadata and standards for spatial data infrastructures.

• Fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems — spatial data structures, projections, coordinate systems and cartographic principles.
• Remote Sensing and Image Interpretation — electromagnetic spectrum, sensors, multispectral and hyperspectral image analysis.
• Digital Image Processing — preprocessing, classification, change detection and feature extraction techniques.
• Spatial Databases and Geo-Information Systems — database design, spatial SQL, integration of raster and vector data.
• Geospatial Programming and Web GIS — automation with Python, APIs, web mapping frameworks and online data services.
• Spatial Analysis and Modelling — geostatistics, network analysis, suitability and risk modelling for environmental and urban applications.
• Field Data Collection and GNSS Techniques — mobile mapping, GPS/GNSS surveying and ground truthing workflows.
• Research Project or Thesis — an independent applied research project or thesis that addresses a real-world geospatial problem, supervised by faculty.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelors degree in geography, geomatics, environmental science, civil or environmental engineering, surveying, computer science or a closely related discipline. A satisfactory undergraduate academic record is required; applicants with relevant professional experience may also be considered. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency through recognised tests or an equivalent qualification accepted by the university. Required application materials typically include academic transcripts, a curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose and one or more academic or professional references.
